Overview

St. Francis Xavier University is a top-ranking Canadian university seeking a Manager, Student Development and Engagement to join our team. Reporting to the Director, Student Life, the Manager, Student Development & Engagement designs, develops, implements, and evaluates programs that meet the continually changing needs of StFX's students, with a focus on increasing student involvement, engagement, and development. The Manager will lead the collaboration with campus partners in the development and implementation of annual program plans guided by the first-year experience framework and strategic priorities for the department of Student Life.

The Manager, Student Development and Engagement has a primary objective to effectively communicate to and engage students in the programs and services offered that contribute to their overall academic success and personal development. The nature of this work will require that they work variable hours so that they are often present at campus events which take place in the evenings and some weekends.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and renew content for educational and community development programs for student development, including the Xaverian Community Foundations modules, new student transition, substance harm reduction, and personal development.
  • Coordinate planning for high impact days to engage students in safer alternatives and promote harm reduction and community respect.
  • Hire, train and supervise a team of Community Educators (CEs), student leaders responsible for assisting with the design and delivery of a campus wide FYE program plan and framework.
  • Lead the substance harm reduction strategy, including chairing the PEP-AH campus committee, acting as the Keep It Social liaison, and participating on related Atlantic regional committees.
  • Participate in the leadership, planning, and a rotation to supervise the Bloomfield Hub one evening per week (7- 11pm)
  • Regularly throughout the academic cycle, liaise with campus resources to promote them and ensure awareness of services available to students
  • Collaborate with the Student Services leadership team to develop common curriculum for student mentors and deliver the training to student leaders.
  • Assist the Manager, Restorative Practices and Student Conduct to develop and facilitate educational outcomes for students, with a focus on student development.

Qualifications

  • A Masters degree (focus on Education, Curriculum design, Student Affairs, Social Work or related) with at least 3-5 years experience working in the area of student development.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a high degree of approachability and empathy.
  • Excellent intercultural communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work positively in diverse communities.
  • Understanding the importance of community engagement and accountability.
  • Mental Health First Aid training and experiencing addressing mental health crisis' considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated leadership, mentorship and coaching skills.
  • Excellent communication and good judgement under pressure.
